National Warri Festival Begins Friday

While on a Tortola bareboat or other charter destination, you are likely to see many local pastimes. These include cock fights, dominoes and a unique game called Warri. Warri is Antigua's national board game, and the entire month of October is devoted the the National Warri Festival. The game was brought to the island by West Coast African sugar plantation slaves in the 19th century. Like many slave traditions, the game was seen as a threat by the Europeans, and was driven underground. It has proved remarkably resilient, however, and was passed on by word of mouth for many years. Warri refers to the hollows in a thick board made from local island wood and carved in the shape of a fish. The pieces or counters (traditionally known as nickars) were small nuts from the Guillandra bush. Now, they are often small identical shells found on local beaches. The game can be played with two or more people and the object is to capture 25 counters using your cunning and mental arithmetic. The game has achieved worldwide popularity and has been included in the Mind Sports Olympics in London. The competition, organized into classes, is stiff!

If you are looking for your own unique pastime, why not try a sailing vacation aboard CAPERCAILLIE, a 81' Swan monohull. Capercaillie not only offers the best in performance sailing, but it is also an extremely comfortable yacht which offers as much fun for children who love water skiing, wake boarding and other water sports as adults who love good food and exceptional sailing. Above all, Capercaillie can take you to the most magical places, either in the Caribbean or the Mediterranean - a different place and a different adventure every day. Below deck, the yacht accommodates 6 guests in three air-conditioned cabins featuring double beds or twin singles, each with an ensuite bathroom, TV and DVD. The spacious teak-panelled main saloon with good head height, beautifully furnished and decorated, is equipped with a comprehensive entertainment system (including a keyboard) while the communications area comes complete with worldwide transmission facilities. Capercaillie is a wide boat and therefore the saloon affords generous space in which to dine, read a book or watch a DVD from the extensive library of adult and children's titles available on the boat. Or guests might just want to sip a glass of champagne from the well equipped bar while listening to their favorite music through the excellent sound system. Above deck, the twin cockpit layout allows for undisturbed sunbathing and relaxation amidships while the task of sailing is handled aft. An awning provides shade and a broad automated swimming platform makes for easy access to the water. Whether out for a lazy sail or swinging in the hammock, life aboard Capercaillie is sublime and easy-going. The excellent cook will tailor the menu to your tastes selecting fresh ingredients from local markets or on lucky days, cooking your own catch. The yacht carries a full range of water sports equipment for every age and the experienced crew know the best places to snorkel. For those who prefer to stay above the water, there is the thrill of water skiing or exploring a nearby island paradise. Capercaillie has a young and friendly crew of four who love taking guests to the beautiful islands. To learn more about CAPERCAILLIE, click. Soca King Dies at 60

You all know the song...it gets you swaying your hips and waving your arms. And, probably on a Tortola bareboat charter or at a wedding or office party, - after a drink or two- you were part of the congo line singing:

Ole ole -ole ole/ ole ole -ole ole
Me mind on fire--Me soul on fire -- Feeling hot, hot hot
Party people - all around me feeling hot, hot,hot
What to do - on a night like this
Music sweet - I can't resist
We need a party song - a fundamental jam
So we go rum-bum-bum-bum
Yeah we rum-bum-bum-bum
Feeling hot, hot, hot - feeling hot, hot, hot, oh Lord
See people rocking - hear people chanting - feeling hot, hot, hot
Keep up this spirit, come on let's do it - feeling hot, hot, hot
It's in the air - Celebration time
Music sweet- captivate your mine
We have this party song - This fundamental jam
So we go rum-bum-bum-bum
Yeah we rum-bum-bum-bum
Feeling hot, hot, hot - feeling hot, hot, hot - oh Lord
Ole ole- ole ole/ ole ole - ole ole
People in the party - hot, hot, hot
People in the party - hot, hot, hot
They come to the party know what they got
They come to the party know what they got
I'm hot, you're hot---he's hot, she's hot
I'm hot, you're hot - he's hot, she's hot
Real hot, real hot, real hot, real hot
How you feeling? Hot, hot hot
How you feeling? Hot, hot, hot
How you feeling? hot, hot hot
Hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot...

The government and people of Montserrat announced with sadness the passing of Alphonsus "The Mighty Arrow" Cassell - the Soca King of the World at age 60 after a 1 1/2 year battle with cerebral cancer. Arrow was responsible for taking the soca genre to the international music scene with his 1982 smash hit, Hot, Hot, Hot. Having won the local Monsterrat Calypso Competition 3 times, he was discovered by former Beatles manager, Sir George Martin, who worked with Arrow to turn his focus on recording and touring. Arrow recorded 22 studio albums, with other notable hits including, Groove Master, Long Time, Dancing Mood, and O' La Soca. He performed at music festivals, concerts and gala events around the world. Hot, Hot, Hot was used as the theme for the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. He was the first soca singer to be honored by the Queen, when he received the MBE award more than a decade ago. Arrow was born on November 16, 1954 and came from a respectable and well educated family in Montserrat. He suffered many set-backs during his life - his home in Richmond Hill, Montserrat was first hit by a hurricane and then completely destroyed by the volcano. Always a generous man, even though battling cancer, he last performed at the Haiti Relief Concert following the devastating earthquake in that country. His funeral will take place on Friday, October 1 at the Montserrat Cultural Centre. Additional flights are expected to land on Montserrat as both the island and visitors from around the world mourn the passing of this great artist. - Donna

My Anchor Watch for Blackberrys

Bareboaters, Tired of sleepless nights worrying about your anchor drifting? My Anchor Watch might just put an end to that, at least for Blackberry users. The program uses your Blackberry's GPS to monitor your boat's position. If the boat moves outside of the radius set when you anchor, the phone will alert you by your choice of flashing text, sounding alarm, or even an SMS to another phone. The program is so smart that it can even exclude a section of the anchor circle if you are moored near another boat or have tucked yourself into a more protected area closer to the coastline so that you are alerted if your boat drifts into that section as well. And at $19.90 for a lifetime license of the current and all future versions of the program, you don't really have anything to lose by giving it a shot. For more information or to download the program, go to http://www.myanchorwatch.com/.

RFA Wave Ruler In Tortola

A few years ago, while sailing the Sir France Drake Channel between Peter and Cooper Islands, we passed a Royal Fleet patrol ship. If I recall- it was supposedly the one that Prince William was on to conduct maritime patrols against drug trafficking. It was quite a thrill! Well, this weekend, those on a Tortola bareboat charter will also get a chance to have that thrill when the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) ship, Wave Ruler, will be visiting Tortola between September 18-21. The ship's mission in patrolling the North Atlantic and the Caribbean is to provide support to the United Kingdom's overseas territories. Wave Ruler's primary role is to provide regional support in the event of natural disasters. Thus the ship and crew can provide medical and humanitarian aid, including providing food, water and shelter if necessary. While in Tortola, the Commanding Officer will host a VIP Luncheon and the ships company will provide training for local police and customs officers. This will be the second time the ship has visited Tortola.

You do not need to be a crew member of the Royal Fleet to appreciate sailing in the BVI. Come discover the luxury of a private cruise on CAMPAI. This 72' performance cutter is not only a beautiful vessel, she is also an ideal blend of powerful sailing and unsurpassed cruising comfort. A premier charter yacht, CAMPAI has the latest equipment for safe piloting, plus many special extras for pure pleasure. Her professional crew of three has exacting standards for seamanship, service and cuisine. Committed to unobtrusive yet undeniably lavish attention to detail, Captain Matthew Hayes and his crew stand ready to please - whether by simply leaving you alone to savor your privacy and serenity - or by helping you experience the exhilaration of sailing this exceptional yacht. CAMPAI sleeps 6 guests in 3 cabins. The aft ensuite master cabin has a centerline queen bed. Two ensuite guest cabins are located forward with one double cabin to port and and upper/lower single berths in the forward starboard cabin. CAMPAI is fully air conditioned throughout. High vs. Low Season

The other day I was having a discussion with someone about how great a Tortola bareboat charter vacation is. She was thinking about taking her family at Christmas time, which is the height of high season. In the course of the conversation, I agreed what a wonderful holiday gift that would be, but I mentioned that my family prefers to go during low season. That than lead to discussion about tropical weather- what are the differences, how do you find out what is happening, and is it safe to go during "hurricane season". So, I thought you might like to be part of the conversation.

First, high season roughly coincides with the winter season and often runs from the end of October through April. Low season is usually the summer season from May through October. The pros of chartering during High season are that the weather is usually great, everything like restaurants, etc. are open. The cons are that there tends to be more people and it is usually the most expensive period for just about everything from airfare, to charter fees, etc. During low season, the pros are there are fewer people, it is easier to meet local residents, and it is often the least expensive period. Most chartering companies give low season discounts. The cons of low season chartering are that some of the restaurants may be closed or have shorter hours and there is always the question of the weather- though usually in June, when we go, it is gorgeous.

That brings us to the second part of the conversation- tropical weather. The official hurricane season starts on June 1 and ends November 30. The types of weather patterns you might see are: 1) Tropical wave- a shallow tropical trough system normally moving west. Ahead of the wave, the wind is generally north-east and behind south-east. 2) Tropical disturbance - slight rotary circulation with no closed isobars. There are no strong winds associated with a tropical disturbance.3) Tropical depression - rotary circulation at the surface with several closed isobars. The highest winds are 34 knots (29mph). 4) Tropical Storm - distinct circulation with winds up to 63 knots (74mph). A hurricane track normally starts in the doldrums 10 degreesN and 30 degrees West to 50 degrees West. It moves in a west-north-west direction, veers more north west gradually, curving to north and north east as it reaches 30degrees North. Information on tropical systems is available from many sources 4-5 days before these weather conditions are experienced in the BVI. If you plan on chartering during low season, it is probably a good idea to have trip insurance to protect your vacation investment. Despite the chance of wet weather- scheduling your charter during low season can save considerable money.

Whatever the weather and whatever time of year you charter, the British Virgin Islands are a yachtsman's paradise. - Donna

New BVI Medical School?

The British Virgin Islands government is moving forward with tentative plans to bring a medical school to the islands. Within the next nine months, the government hopes to find a suitable private education provider with an established medical school to bring a privatized facility to the Virgin Islands. Looking at the school as a way to significantly stimulate the economy by bringing in thousands of prospective students from around the world, the school would also have benefits for local students with scholarship programs and possibly lower tuition. There are other medical schools established throughout the Caribbean. 3,975 students attend St. George's University School of Medicine in Grenada, and 2,100 students attend 4 medical schools in St. Kitts and Nevis. Another medical school is located in Dominica.

It does not take a medical degree to see the health benefits of a Tortola bareboat charter. There is no better way to revitalize your soul and create lasting memories than aboard your own private yacht. One way to jumpstart your new feng shui is aboard the 70' catamaran, SEAZEN II. Seazen II is the first Sunreef 70' offered for charters. Exceptionally spacious and wide, with a new layout arrangement, this modern catamaran can easily accommodate 8-10 guests in 3 double cabins and 1 cabin with an innovative four folding-bed system that is perfect for children. Especially requested by the owner, SEAZEN II represents Japanese style, the essential aspect of which is the simplicity and minimalism. Frugal forms are kept in brown and cream with touches of muffled red. Visible structural geometry is achieved by the combination of the traditional layout of Tatami mats and decorative elements imitating indigenous Shoji screens and sliding doors. The overall scheme is accentuated by the horizontal line of arranging furniture: low-level tables and bar, surrounded by separate sitting cushions placed in wooden frames, platform-like simple beds. Sparse and carefully selected decorations greatly replenish this posh, yet minimalistic interior. Captain Patrick and his wife, Chef Lani, along with mate Nicholas, look forward to hosting your holiday of a lifetime and providing you with memories to last long after you are back on solid ground. Whether it is an action-filled week of sailing and water sports, or the opportunity to relax and be pampered in a tranquil anchorage, their years of experience and attention to detail will enable them to customize a trip to exceed any expectations. Click to learn more about the crew of SEAZEN II.

Horizon’s new Active addition!

British Virgin Islands, September 2010 – Horizon Yacht Charters (BVI), has announced a hot new trend joining their Horizon Active package at the British Virgin Island base in the Caribbean. Stand up paddle boards or SUP’s will be taking over the water. Aimed at satisfying the ‘active’ enthusiast, charter guests will be able to rent out the SUP’s for the duration of their yacht charter and give this new craze a go in the luxury of warm turquoise waters.
The SUP’s are 11ft 4” high volume Bic longboards that you stand up on the entire time, maneuvering around the water with a single long paddle. These boards are perfect sea boards, as they are stable enough for beginners to instantly “get it”, but maneuverable enough to satisfy the “Laird Hamiltons’ of this world .An ideal way to explore deserted coves tucked away around the islands, and work on your balance and core strength at the same time!. SUPs can be enjoyed by all the family. A fun way to exercise or have a great new adventure to share whilst on charter with the whole family or just explore the islands.

Paddle boards will be available to rent on charter for $175 for 7 nights
