Sail the Azores on Dove this Summer!
From Captain Larry Tyler
"THE DOVE has arrived here in Faial, Azores. The trip took 17 days from St Martin. The first 12 days we had little wind and sometimes no wind at all and the little we had was on the nose, so we were forced to sail North to nearly the same Latitude as Bermuda after which we had 5 days of gales which are still blowing now. But we flew along doing 200 miles a day!!!!
"We saw a number of whales, lots of dolphins, many, many Logger Head turtles and thousands of Portuguese Man O'War jelly fish - I love watching them sail over the waves. Went swimming a couple of times mid Atlantic with the jelly fish and the turtles, I looked up from taking photos of a turtle to find The Dove was slowly sailing away and Jenny had gone down below. I can't even start to imagine what it must be like to fall overboard.
"Great to have arrived though, and not have to try to sleep at 45 degrees. I'm sitting here now at the saloon table checking my emails and listening to the wind outside howling in the rigging of all the yachts that are here while the boat hardly moves. Bliss..." Available for eco-adventure charters this summer in the Azores for guests interested in participating in the sailing and experiencing wildlife up close. Owner / captain Laurence Tyler is offering the very attractive rates of EUR 6,000 (or $7,000) / 4 guests and EUR 4,000 (or $5,000) / 2 guests, inclusive of provisions, standard bar, table wines and marina fees.

Wooden Boat Regatta Set For Weekend Fun
This marks the 36th anniversary of the annual Wooden Boat Regatta on Jost Van Dyke. Foxy and the West End Yacht Club have always held a fun-filled event, and this year is no exception with the fun lasting May 28-30th. In 1974, Foxy and some friends decided that wooden boats should have a chance to race. They originally started with seven boats, but now the event is quite large. Unfortunately, the age of wooden boats is slowly disappearing, but not to be deterred, Foxy has kept the legacy going by revising the rules and allowing some of the first fiberglass boats to compete in a Classic Race. No pun intended- the Classic race is for "classic" fiberglass boats (or built of any other material) over 30 years old. As usual, any event put on by Foxy involves fun, fun, fun! Foxy's Beach Bar is the place to be to send the crews off and party while they race and party when they return. There will be nonstop music all weekend. If you are boating in the BVI, you can try and anchor in Great Harbour or one of the beautiful other harbours on Jost, or if you are concerned about finding a spot, there are several ferries that will be running over to Jost Van Dyke.
If you are looking for a "classic" vacation- stop reading! If you want the ride of your life and the adventure of a lifetime- then climb aboard the 60' sloop, Elinda! This beautiful monohull has accommodations for 2-4 passengers in 2 well-appointed cabins. One large cabin is forward of the salon with a queen-sized bed on the port side and single on the starboard side. It offers ensuite bathroom and shower. The other cabin is aft of the galley w

Gearing Up for St. Lucia Carnival

The official start of the St. Lucia Carnival begins May 30 and ends July 2o, with the theme, "Nothing sweeter than dat." Delta Airlines, however, has sweetened it by increasing flights and offering special fares to the island. As of May 12th, round trip fare between Atlanta and St. Lucia is US$488. Additional taxes, fees, and baggage charges may apply. The tickets must be purchased by May 31 and the fare is valid only for travel between May 19 and July 31. In addition, Delta has added 3 extra flights a week to St. Lucia's Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) going from 7 to 10. St. Lucia has two major festivals- the Jazz Festival, which recently ended and its Carnival, which is one of the best in the Caribbean. While the highlights of the Celebration usually take place during the third week of July, if you go now, you will see pan-yards full of practicing steel-band performers, mas camps working on elaborate costumes and perhaps will catch soca artists and calypsonians putting the finishing touches on their original masterpieces. To learn more about the St. Lucia Carnival, as well as Carnival celebrations throughout the Caribbean, click to see our Carnival article. We have many charters available that are offering specials and last minute deals for the summer. With charter promotions, great air fare and a Carnival celebration to boot, "Nothing sweeter than dat" in St. Lucia! - Donna

West End Ferry Terminal To Get Major Makeover
For those that boat the BVI, often your charter begins and ends at the West End Ferry Terminal. In the past, we have talked about the cramped, crowded conditions at this rather unimpressive building. We have also mentioned talk about updating the terminal. Well, the talk is over and the plans have been revealed. The new terminal, which is said to be, "state of the art" will begin renovations, hopefully this summer. The plans call for a 3 story building that will enhance the port facility for not only charterers, but small landing crafts and barges, as well as mega yachts. The new covered terminal should have a waiting lounge with seating...no more standing around or sitting on your duffles! The first floor will have the international arrival and departure terminals, ticket agent stations and even more amazing- a luggage conveyor belt! There will be a separate storage area for items that are being picked up by the ferries, as well as a separate terminal for domestic traffic. If you need to mail that last postcard of your boat the BVI memories, you will even find a post office substation. The second floor will have administrative offices and a restaurant - no more buying drinks and bakery from street vendors selling out of coolers and ice chests. Security guards and the dock master will occupy the third floor. Construction will begin with the construction of bulkheads and the reclamation of land along the coast adjacent to the existing Ferry Terminal. Once completed, the new 75,390 sq. foot terminal will commence. During construction, the old West End Ferry Terminal will continue to operate as usual. We will try to update you with photos as the project unfolds. The new terminal will be a welcome change. - Donna

Restore body and mind with a luxury vacation on “The Meanderer”
“Top to bottom, stern to stem, absolutely wonderful. Thank you for a week we will never forget. We loved the food, the wine, the scenery, but most of all we loved the warmth and hospitality we experienced from the moment we stepped aboard. You are all master mariners and master hosts. Thanks!”
EA, Mequon, WI
The finest things in life are best savored slowly, and there is no better way to experience the lovely countryside of France’s Upper Loire region than a cruise aboard Meanderer. Originally built in 1948 to serve as a commercial barge, she was converted to a luxury hotel barge in 1992. Since then, she has undergone further upgrades—including new teak decks—and now offers one of the most luxurious barge vacations available in Europe.
From stem to stern, Meanderer stretches 123 feet, a delightful mix of old-world style and modern convenience. The décor is beautiful, light, and exquisitely comfortable—perfect for guests who want to relax, slow down, and experience life at a slower, more elegant pace. The ship’s attractive, full-width saloon and dining area has large picture windows on each side that are perfect for taking in the passing scenery.
For those who love modern conveniences, Meanderer also offers air conditioning, satellite TV, and free broadband internet access. There’s even a heated Jacuzzi on the sundeck. Below decks, passengers stay in airy Twin/Queen cabins, each with its own private bath, flat-screen TV, and DVD/CD player.
New barge owners George and Susan Kovalick speak fluent French and know France well. They also understand the difference between a great vacation and a truly exceptional one. That’s why they make every effort to ensure that all of their guests fully enjoy their stays aboard Meanderer—whether they want to tour local vineyards, bike the French countryside, or simply relax.
It’s also why they offer an array of themed cruises, each focused on a particular interest, such as Antiques, Art, Biking, or Chocolate and Wine. For golf enthusiasts, Meanderer offers a weeklong cruise that brings guests to some of France’s most spectacular courses, including “Les Bourdes,” one of Europe’s Top 5.
No matter what the theme, a cruise on Meanderer provides guests with a chance to enjoy fabulous cuisine—served al fresco under a canopy or below decks in the elegant salon—while navigating some of France’s finest waterways, including the Pont Canal de Briare, designed by the famed Gustave Eiffel. Other popular destinations include the lovely town of Montargis, Fontainebleau, and the wine regions of Chablis, Irancy, St Bris, and the Caves de Bailly.
“At voyage’s end, our guests are invariably relaxed and happy—albeit a little heavier from all of the good food and wines,” says owner Susan Kovalick. “They really seem to appreciate a chance to see France off the well traveled tourist paths.” Call or email Crystal today for more information on this or any of our Sensational Barges . 800-742-7641

Regattas, Rum Shops and Analisa
The annual Mount Gay Regatta in Barbados is in full swing. Offering visitors the chance to experience great sailing, entertainment and hospitality, the events kicked off last night with a barbecue and will continue throughout the weekend with plenty of aquatic activities and entertainment. The regatta is named for one of the rums of Barbados. Rum has been distilled on Barbados since the mid 1660s. It is made from molasses- the sugary residue of sugar
production- and is aged in white oak barrels. Allowed to mature from 6 months to 12 years, there is an amazing variety of rum that can be found all over the island. The cultural tradition of rum shops is alive and well in Barbados, with over 1,000 of them scattered across the island. Originally called a Tipling House, they now resemble a general store. Typically, you will find a chattel house with three doors out front, a large wooden counter inside and an array of shelves displaying pretty much everything, including bottles of rum. There is usually an area for men to drink, talk and play dominoes. You will know you have entered a rum shop if you order by the bottle rather than the glass, dominoes are being slammed on tables and everyone appears to be talking at once!
There is nothing like the smooth taste of local rum, except of course, if you are enjoying it aboard your own private charter in destination paradise. Analisa is a 60' Hatteras motor yacht charter that is luxurious and elegant. She can accommodate 4 adults and two children with luxury, comfort and styl
e. Fully air conditioned throughout, her handcrafted wood finish gives an elegant and serene interior. Her large saloon - opening onto a spacious aft deck area - gives more living space than any other vessel of this length. Analisa is fully equipped with DVDs, CDs, Bose Sound System and Internet. Each cabin has en suite bathroom facilities with enclosed shower stalls. Large closets and high quality Egyptian cotton sheets ensure your comfort. Each cabin has its own TV and DVD. The aft deck area gives opportunity to relax in comfort and dine under the stars. And, the large array of toys provide fun and entertainment for everyone. Perfect for honeymooners, two couples or for a family of four, make your dreams come true. Just pack and step aboard Analisa for memories that will last a lifetime. Don't Forget St. Thomas

For many of us that boat the BVI, St. Thomas is merely a transit point. We fly in, grab a taxi to either the ferry dock in Charlotte Amalie or Red Hook and head over to West End Tortola to begin our charter experience. The way back is similar, except we are usually totally bummed by having to end the vacation of a lifetime!! If you have a little time to kill, here is a quick guide to some things to do while in St. Thomas-
Beaches: No matter where you are on this 32 sq. mile island, the beaches are never more than a 10 minute drive away. The most popular is Magens Bay, a half mile arc of white sand fringed with palms. Here you will find both locals and visitors enjoying picnics and paddle boats. For those looking to snorkel or dive a little offshore, both Brewer's Bay and Secret Harbour have a fish-filled reef. In addition, Coki Beach has dive shops for equipment rentals and lessons. Sapphire Beach is the place to head for board sailors, while Hull Bay Beach is the place for surfers to catch the Atlantic winter swells.
Fishing: Billfishing is one of the island's top recreations. The hot spot is the North Drop, a 5 1/2 mile deep chasm filled with abundant schools of bait fish and the cool waters of the Atlantic. 1000+ pound marlins have been caught! Now that's a lot of fish!!!
Speaking about fish, Fish Fry's are a passion of Virgin Islanders. Look for them after dark, especially in the Fort Christian parking lot. They are an informal place to meet and greet. Besides fried fish and johnnycakes, enjoy the calypso open mics to get a special take on island satire.
Shopping: Charlotte Amalie's Main Street bustles with duty-free shopping. Your best bets are gold and diamonds, fashions, hi-tech electronics and of course, the Virgin Island's own Cruzan Rum.
Mega Yachts: There is nothing like looking.. Check out the Yacht Haven Grande marina. Oracle Corporation's Larry Ellison was the first to dock Rising Sun, his 452' mega yacht in the marina, and now there is a small fleet of mega yachts to drool over.
Next time you Boat the BVI, don't be in such a rush. Take the time either before or after your charter to explore the island of St. Thomas! It may have "U.S." in the name, but it is still the islands!!!! - Donna

Blue Beads of Statia
For those that like to dive, the tiny island of Sint Eustatius (Statia) is an archaeological wonderland. Besides ruins, shipwrecks, peacock flounder and the amazing flying gurnard, many divers search for something very special in Statia - blue beads. Both five-sided and chevron glass beads can be found around the island, especially in the harbor. A glass factory in Amsterdam made the beads from 1660-1680 for the Dutch East India Company for "the primitive people" as a reward for slaves. The seafaring ships of the Dutch East India Company took those beads all over the world wherever they traded. Many of these beads were stored in Statia and were used as payment for wages and as articles of barter up until the time of emancipation. The wearing of beads as adornment and as a sign of wealth was customary through the islands. After emancipation, Statia folklore states that the locals went to the cliffs and threw their beads into the sea, thus signifying their release from slavery and ability to earn real money. The truth of this folklore is unknown, but most of the beads detected on Statia are found at the base of the cliffs. Beads are the only artifacts visitors are allowed to keep. The search for beads is still one of the favorite past times of locals and visitors alike. Early in the morning, searchers can be seen along the waterfront, with heads bent and backs bowed, hoping to find the elusive blue beads. It is said once you have found a bead, you will ever more belong to Statia and will return again and again. To learn more about Statia, CLICK to see our latest edition of Charter Chatter.

With its usually calm warm waters, steady trade winds and numerous sister islands within a line of sight, the Caribbean has long been a favorite spot for sailors. So, it is only fitting that there are a number of sailing regattas in the Caribbean, especially in the Spring. The diversity of organized sailboat regattas in the Caribbean is one thing that makes sailing in the islands so unique. Regattas of all types range from a "whatever floats race" (where crews bring their "boats" to the regattas, assemble them and set off sailing) to high level international match racing regattas and everything in between. Caribbean regattas attract some of the world's best sailboat racers from the top-tier America's Cup teams along with amateur sailors that are given a chance to sail with and against these well-known sailing personalities. It is not uncommon for the various regattas to attract upwards of 250 yachts annually for each event. All types of racing classes are spread out on various racing courses from catamarans to 85 foot maxi racers. The charter boat fleets are also well represented, giving those that do not have their own yachts the opportunity to compete in these fabulous venues. Even wooden boats and vintage fiberglass yachts have a chance to test their skills against each other.
Aside from racing, there is a vibrant social scene that is part of a Caribbean regatta. There is plenty to do day and night, with great parties, live music, dancing, cultu
ral displays and a variety of food and drink to choose from. If you are one that likes sailboat racing, whether watching from a spectator boat or actually joining in with a crew, the Caribbean is truly one of the finest places in the world to participate in a sailing regatta. If you want to start slow, but have a blast, a good way to start is while boating the BVI. Foxy's Wooden Boat Regatta, like all of Foxy's sponsored parties, is something to remember. While crews are racing, fans party to nonstop music, food and fun. And, while you are having fun, you will also being doing something good for the BVI. The funds from this regatta help support the Jost Van Dyke Preservation Society.
